We are pleased to announce that the LuMind Research Down Syndrome Foundation in conjunction with DSACT will host an exciting research presentation on Thursday, September 24th. The presentation will be held from 6:30-8:30pm in the Norman Hackerman Building on the UT campus (100 E. 24th St, Austin 78712 - on the corner of Speedway Dr. and 24th St.). There will be a meet and greet followed by presentations from Michael Harpold, PhD, Chief Scientific Officer of the LuMind RDS and Jon Pierce-Shimomura, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Neuroscience and Fellow, Waggoner Center for Alcohol and Addiction Research.
Below is a sneak peak of a portion of the presentation:
"There are over 200 genes on the 21st chromosome. Unfortunately, we don't know what many of these genes do. By systematically testing all of these in our simple worm model, we recently discovered an important role for a previously unstudied gene. This gene plays a critical role in transmitting the excitatory neurotransmitter acetylcholine. In addition, we also found that a drug that prevents death of neurons in our simple model of Down syndrome-related Alzheimer's disease actually improves cognition and memory in mice with Alzheimer's disease. This is the first example of successfully moving a novel drug-like compound from a screen in the rapid worm model to mouse."
